VIRGIN MARY’S OF ARMATA CHURCH
It is situated near the lighthouse of Spetses and was established between 1824 – 1830 by the historic family of Ioannis Koutsis, in commemoration of the great sea-battle between the Spetsiots and the Turks on 8th September 1822. Inside the church there is a picture of Koutsis, which describes the battle.
It is well-known by now, that the Island of Spetses is a pole of attraction to celebrities. You can’t really walk around without bumping onto a couple of Magazine-Cover-Faces. But it is worth mentioning that there are no paparazzi around, nor any of these looks from passersby full of curiosity.
Spetses is the homeland of Laskarina Bouboulina, the legendary woman admiral of the Greek War of Independence which took place in 1821. Spetses is considered to be an historical place, as it is the first island to revolt against the Ottoman Turks.
